Why support scholarships on Giving Day?

Why support scholarships?

Parents who already invest in their child's education through school fees might wonder why they should contribute to a scholarship program as well. The answer lies in the long-term benefits that these programs provide to the entire school community.

By supporting scholarships, parents help attract talented and motivated students who may not have the financial means to attend otherwise. These students often enrich the classroom environment with their unique perspectives, drive, and skills, raising the overall academic and extracurricular standards.

Additionally, a strong scholarship program enhances the school’s reputation, making it a more vibrant and sought-after institution. This, in turn, benefits all students by fostering a richer, more inclusive educational experience and cultivating a network of diverse, accomplished alumni that can inspire and support future generations. Parents' donations are an investment in building a community where everyone can thrive and contribute to shared success.

PLC Sydney has a proud 136-year history of providing educational opportunities and financial assistance to students and families.

We talk a lot about what you can get from a PLC Sydney education, but an essential part of that education is about what you can give back and making a difference in your communities locally, nationally and across the globe.

Giving Day is an opportunity for us all to unite and raise funds to support our Scholarships and Bursaries Program and therefore support students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to access a PLC Sydney education.

Year 12 student, Ellie Cole, embodies many talents.

She is a dedicated athlete with a keen interest in STEM subjects. Ellie has won prestigious science competitions, including the National Sleek Geeks Science competition in Year 7 and the Science Teachers Association New South Wales (STANSW) Young Scientist Awards in Year 10.

Ellie began diving in Year 5, having switched from gymnastics. Her skills quickly advanced, earning her a trial at the New South Wales Institute of Sport. Despite suffering a serious back injury in Year 9, Ellie’s resilience helped her focus on her studies while she recovered. She made a successful return, just in time to help PLC Sydney take out the 2023 IGSA Championship.

Ellie’s performance at the Diving Olympic Trials secured her place in the Australian team competing at the Paris Olympic Games this year, where she achieved seventh place in Women’s 10m Platform. An incredible achievement for her first Olympics!

With the Olympics behind her, Ellie is now concentrating on her HSC exams and hopes to study Engineering at university. Her focus and determination have inspired her fellow students and motivated others to pursue their own goals and dreams.

Scholarships are important on so many levels, not only for the opportunity they afford students who may not otherwise have the chance to study at the College, but also scholarship recipients add diversity to the school community, which is another really strong feature of the scholarship program. We want to enable the scholarship recipient to grow in their talents and capacities, but equally we want the recipients to enable and encourage other students to reach their full potential as well. Scholarship recipients can help raise standards across school programs and add to the rich social fabric of a school.

DR PAUL BURGIS, PRINCIPAL, PLC SYDNEY

On Wednesday 20 November, PLC Sydney is embarking on our second 24 hour Giving Day, where our entire PLC Sydney family, past and present will be asked to support PLC Sydney’s scholarships and bursaries.

For one day only, thanks to the generosity of PLC Sydney’s matching donors, who have already pledged their support, your donation will be DOUBLED. This means that your donation will have twice the impact, as when you donate $50, the Scholarship fund receives $100; $100 becomes $200 and  $500 becomes $1000!  All donations are fully tax deductible.

Join us in support of tomorrow's women on Wednesday 20 November, as we raise funds for scholarships today. Together, we can give the gift of a PLC Sydney education to more young women well into the future. Young women who will make a difference in their communities and in the wider world.
